Re-views.org | Psystar says it is “definitely still shipping” its Mac clones.
Posted by Reviews in Computer, Electronics, Gadgets, Mac on 08 14th, 2008It looks like Psystar isn’t about to let a little lawsuit stop it from selling its noise-ridden, OSX-running computers, with the company now saying that it is “definitely still shipping” its Mac clones, and that it also is making its restore utilities that “enhance the computing experience” available to its customers at no extra cost. As Information Week reports, the company also recently enlisted Palo Alto-based law firm Carr & Ferrell to help it out with its current predicament. As those that follow such things may recall, they’ve not only tussled with Apple before, but won.

Posted by Reviews in Electronics, Gadgets, HeadPhones, Portable Audio on 08 14th, 2008Logitech is getting into the earbuds game, announcing today that it’s buying privately-held Ultimate Ears. Historically focusing on spendy in-ear monitors for live musicians, Ultimate Ears has recently hit the earbud game with full force, and Logitech seems to want a piece of that action. Plus the acquisition price of $34 million is like, what, profits from your last seven minutes of iPod dock sales, Logitech? Logitech and Ultimate Ears expect the deal to close in August.

Re-views.org | Gateway P-7811 FX gaming laptop gets reviewed.
Posted by Reviews in Computer, Electronics, Gadgets on 08 14th, 2008We already got our hands on Gateway’s new P-7811 FX gaming laptop for a brief looksee, but if you’re craving a few more details on the (relatively) bargain-priced unit, you can now hit up Laptop Magazine for a full review. While they had some of the same quibbles with the “almost garish” design, they were mightily impressed by the laptop overall, with them flat out declaring it “one of the best value-price rigs of 2008.” The site was especially impressed by the Gateway’s “beautiful high-definition display,” as well as its welcome HDMI and eSATA ports, its spacious and comfortable keyboard and, of course, some of the best 3D performance around for the price. On the downside, they found that speakers left a bit to be desired, and you don’t get a Blu-ray drive, which is becoming increasingly common even in this price range. Still, if the appearance isn’t a deal-breaker for you, it seems like this one is as solid a bet as any.

Re-views.org | iPhone 3G reception woes unfixable? Maybe, maybe not.
Posted by Reviews in Electronics, Gadgets, iPhone on 08 14th, 2008Support forum threads on Apple’s site and a number of ramblings across these great interwebs are starting to complain at great length about the iPhone 3G’s headlining new feature — 3G reception, that is — and pretty much every aspect of it: signal strength, call dropping, connecting to EDGE when 3G is present, the list goes on. Some smartypants analyst from financial firm Nomura thinks he has it all figured out, saying that the issues are “typical of an immature chipset and radio protocol stack” and suggesting that a firmware update pushed out to existing handsets is unlikely to ease the pain. We’ve been hearing that Cupertino could actually be working on just such an update at this very second, though, so this cat better get ready for the possibility that he could be eating his own words down the road. For what it’s worth, intermittent issues have been reported the world over, so this doesn’t seem to be anything to do with AT&T’s (or anyone else’s) infrastructure — and needless to say, not everyone is having issues to start. And for anyone whose iPhone 3G we just jinxed by writing this post… well, our bad.

Re-views.org | Samsung debuts corn-based E200 Eco cellphone.
Posted by Reviews in Cell Phone, Electronics, Gadgets on 08 14th, 2008Samsung’s new E200 Eco cellphone may not stand out very much based on its specs, which include a 1.3 megapixel camera and MP3 player functionality, but the company is hoping that folks will take notice of it for another reason: its casing is made of corn. Or, more specifically, a corn-based bioplastic, which has some drawbacks of its own but is becoming more and more commonly used these days. No word on a release ’round these parts just yet, but the phone (which also comes in packaging made from recycled materials) will be available in Europe sometime next month.

Re-views.org | Dr. Dre’s Beats headphones keep they heads ringin’ for $350
Posted by Reviews in Electronics, Gadgets, HeadPhones on 07 22nd, 2008You can’t put velvet in these earcups and call ‘em nice headphones! As Mr. Chappelle would likely attest, there are no better headphones in which to drop the beat into than Dr. Dre’s “highly anticipated” Beats. The master of chronic himself has slapped his all-but-forgotten name onto a set of cans (which we spotted originally at CES), and is now ready to introduce ‘em to the world. Starting on July 25th, the crunk-inducing headphones will be available exclusively at Apple and Best Buy (both online and in-store), though the buying experience would likely be way more gangsta if checking out at BeatsByDre.com. Still, for $349.95, we’d recommend looking at more respected names in sound, but if your street cred is sitting at rock bottom, you may have no other choice. Thug life, fool.
