Re-views | Method devised for pwning first-gen iPhones running 2.0 via Windows.
Posted by Reviews in Electronics, Gadgets, iPhone on 07 20th, 2008Feeling a little left out after yesterday’s Mac-based Pwnage Tool festivities, Windows users? Fret not, because the ever-vigilant, ever-studious hacking community has managed to come up with a series of steps to get you back on your feet again with a fully pwned first-gen handset. The whole shebang isn’t necessarily for the most casual jailbreakers — let’s just say it isn’t quite as straightforward as the Mac procedure yet — but it’ll allegedly get you going if you’re starting with an iPhone running 1.1.4 (there are additional steps if you jumped the gun on 2.0, you impatient son of a gun, you — think of it as penance). As always, exercise extreme caution, understand that this could cause your iPhone to spontaneously combust into a useless pile of metal, plastic, and ash, and let us know how it goes in comments.

Posted by Reviews in Electronics, Gadgets, Gaming Console on 07 20th, 2008If you’re looking to step up to a 60GB Xbox 360 but have an irrational fear of Amazon, Circuit City just put it up for pre-order. The price is still $349.99 but ship date is August 6, two inexplicable days later than Amazon. The site lists an HDMI output with upscaling DVD player, which is nice to see. Other than that, all else looks to be the same — no Circuit City bonuses like cables, games, or other schwag.

Re-views.org | Chinavasion’s HD camcorder is just as lame as you think.
Posted by Reviews in Camera, Electronics, Gadgets on 07 18th, 2008Okay, so we won’t totally judge Chinavasion’s “High Definition Great Value” camcorder before we get to know it, but we’ll be frank, we ain’t gettin’ to know it. Those willing to give this heap a fighting chance can look forward to hope for 720p capturing at 30fps, 8-megapixel still shots, a 2.5-inch LCD monitor, 19MB (and not a byte more) of internal memory, an SD / SDHC expansion slot and an HDMI output for showing off your adventures to friends and family (who will inevitably whisper behind your back about what camcorder you chose). Nah, we’re not seriously riding this thing that hard, but do tell if you’re the first soul to lay down $157.50 for one. Anyone, anyone?

Re-views.org | Wii gets custom firmware, purported PSP emulator.
Posted by Reviews in Electronics, Gadgets, Gaming Console on 07 18th, 2008It looks like there’s been a couple of developments on the entirely unofficial Wii activities front in the past few days, including one that seemingly delivers as promised and one that remains a bit of a mystery. That former item comes courtesy of Waninkoko, who has released what is purported to be the “first custom firmware for the Wii,” which apparently allows writable DVDs to be read in emulators. In related news, the folks from TeamShift have released that tantalizing image above of what they claim to be a working PSP emulator for the Wii although, given that it can only muster between 4 and 8 frames per second, “working” doesn’t exactly mean “playable.” They are promising to deliver a beta version that brings games up to their normal speed, however, although they’re unsurprisingly not making any promises about when we can expect that.

Re-views.org | Nintendo says it’s considering Wiimote with built-in MotionPlus.
Posted by Reviews in Electronics, Gadgets, Gaming Console on 07 18th, 2008It’s pretty far down on the surprise-o-meter, but it looks like Nintendo is at least considering the possibility of a Wiimote with built-in MotionPlus for further on down the road. That word comes straight from Nintendo’s Katsuya Eguchi, who told a developer round table that, “as to looking at whether or not it will be an attachment or built in - we’re always looking at how hardware should evolve and where we should take it,” and that, “it’s something we’ll be looking at.” Katsuya also insisted that MotionPlus wasn’t an acknowledgment that the original Wiimote was somehow lacking, saying that Nintendo is “very happy” with what it did, but that, “of course, you always want more.”

Re-views.org | Becker readies Z100 Crocodile GPS system for IFA debut.
Posted by Reviews in Electronics, GPS, Gadgets on 07 18th, 2008Believe it or not, the Berlin-based IFA trade show is nearly upon us, and Becker is more than prepared. Reportedly, the Z100 Crocodile will be making the journey, complete with a 4.3-inch display, an SD card slot, European NAVTEQ maps, a SiRFstarIII GPS receiver and RDS-TMC support. Furthermore, the unit will sport an ultra-rugged exterior meant to handle nearly any jungle excursion you set out on. Expect to hear more (a price and release date would be just fine, Becker) when IFA commences late next month.

Re-views.org | How would you change the Samsung Instinct?
Posted by Reviews in Cell Phone, Electronics, Gadgets on 07 18th, 2008Samsung sure managed to move a lot of these Instincts, but the real question is: how many are on their way back tomorrow? With the 30-day trial period quickly closing in on the earliest of adopters, we’ve seen a myriad complaints about Sprint’s iPhone slayer (its words, not ours), and the first official software update isn’t rumored to occur for at least another week or so. For those folks who plan on sticking with it (or those who’ve already said their final goodbyes), what would you have Sprint include in the next firmware? Better still, what would you change about the design? Are you sick and tired of the inexplicable reception fluctuations? Are you fed up with holding down a button to unlock the display? Aggravated with lockups twice a day, everyday? Enraged by the omission of a “force roam” option? And really, could Sprint have made the battery door any more impossible to remove? Rant on, ranters!
