Re-views.org | Psystar says it is “definitely still shipping” its Mac clones.
Posted by Reviews in Computer, Electronics, Gadgets, Mac on 08 14th, 2008It looks like Psystar isn’t about to let a little lawsuit stop it from selling its noise-ridden, OSX-running computers, with the company now saying that it is “definitely still shipping” its Mac clones, and that it also is making its restore utilities that “enhance the computing experience” available to its customers at no extra cost. As Information Week reports, the company also recently enlisted Palo Alto-based law firm Carr & Ferrell to help it out with its current predicament. As those that follow such things may recall, they’ve not only tussled with Apple before, but won.

Posted by Reviews in Computer, Electronics, Gadgets on 08 14th, 2008We already got our hands on Gateway’s new P-7811 FX gaming laptop for a brief looksee, but if you’re craving a few more details on the (relatively) bargain-priced unit, you can now hit up Laptop Magazine for a full review. While they had some of the same quibbles with the “almost garish” design, they were mightily impressed by the laptop overall, with them flat out declaring it “one of the best value-price rigs of 2008.” The site was especially impressed by the Gateway’s “beautiful high-definition display,” as well as its welcome HDMI and eSATA ports, its spacious and comfortable keyboard and, of course, some of the best 3D performance around for the price. On the downside, they found that speakers left a bit to be desired, and you don’t get a Blu-ray drive, which is becoming increasingly common even in this price range. Still, if the appearance isn’t a deal-breaker for you, it seems like this one is as solid a bet as any.

Re-views.org | Dell debuts Studio Hybrid line of “petite” desktop PCs
Posted by Reviews in Computer, Electronics, Gadgets on 07 29th, 2008Like most product from Dell these days, there’s little surprise left in Dell’s Studio Hybrid desktop lineup of eco-friendly little PCs. First unveiled as a bamboo-clad concept in April, the computer is finally being released by the hardware giant with a starting price of $499, with interchangeable sleeves of Bamboo, Emerald, Quartz, Ruby, Sapphire, Slate and Topaz — the latter six being of the shiny plastic ilk. Dell isn’t slouching on specs though, and seems to realize the potential of the Studio Hybrid — which can be stood vertically or horizontally — in the living room. There’s an HDMI port standard, along with options for WiFi, a wireless keyboard and mouse, Blu-ray and a TV tuner. Dell doesn’t ignore the “green” roots of this project, either, and is including a system recycling kit, along with the natural reduction in packing and manufacturing materials. The Studio Hybrid should be available today.

Re-views.org | Dell’s new Inspiron 13 and Inspiron 518 are after your back to school dollar
Posted by Reviews in Computer, Electronics, Gadgets, LapTop on 07 29th, 2008Dell has never failed to provide compelling reasons — particularly pricetags — for students and / or their cash-strapped parents to pick up a Dell desktop or laptop on the way back to school. This year seems no exception, with Dell adding some special Inspiron configurations to its already beefy budget lineups. The Inspiron 13 laptop (pictured) is pretty much laptop 101, with a 13-inch screen, 8-in-1 media card reader and slot-loading DVD drive in the base model — you’ll have to fork over extra for WiFi, a webcam or Bluetooth. Wal-mart will be carrying a $699 version starting August 3rd, with full configuration coming to Dell.com later that month. The Inspiron 518 desktop (after the break) is similarly straightforward, with DirectX 10 integrated graphics, gigabit Ethernet and a pair of easy-access USB ports on top of the case, in addition to options for a 500GB hard drive and quad core processors. The starting price is $349, and the systems should be available today.
